Magnus Effect can be defined as a phenomenon in which a spinning object flying in a fluid develops a whirlpool of fluid around itself, and experiences a perpendicular force to the line of motion. This behavior is same as that around an aerofoil with a circulation that is generated by the mechanical rotation, rather than by aerofoil action. When a spinning object moves through a fluid it departs from its straight path due to the pressure differences that is created in the fluid because of changes in velocity induced by the spinning body. It is with the help of this Magnus effect Anton Flettner created a rotor ship that has been primarily devised for propulsion. In order to get the best return out of this effect rotor sails are used. The Magnus effect actually refers to a thrust that is operates over a spinning device that spins in the direction of the flowing wind.

Therefore, we can say that it is difficult for telescopic Flettner rotor to work without the Magnus Effect because it works on the principle of propulsion with the help of this effect. Thus, these rotor ships are more efficient and effective than the traditional sails and they have been proved useful even in worst weather conditions. As a result they are greatly in demand and more researches are being conducted to make these rotor ships more useful.
